The Hwa Tsang Monastery is bound by the Australian National Privacy Principles contained in the Commonwealth Privacy Act.
Collection of Personal Information
We obtain most personal information through Monastery membership and tuition class registration process, and updates to personal details. We also collect information from the general public when they send us letters, emails, comments, articles, sketches, or musical items, or competition contributions. In general, the personal information the Hwa Tsang Monastery collects includes (but is not limited to) name, address, contact details, and religious views. The Hwa Tsang Monastery may use information it collects from you for the primary purpose for which it is collected, and for such other secondary purposes that are related to the primary purpose of collection.
How the Hwa Tsang Monastery treats sensitive information
"Sensitive Information" means information relating to a person's racial or ethnic origin, membership of political bodies, religion, membership of a trade union or professional or trade association, sexual preferences, criminal record and health. We may also receive information, questions and queries from members or the public in regard to sensitive religious or personal situations. The Hwa Tsang Monastery may use and disclose Sensitive Information only for the purpose for which it was provided, or a directly related secondary purpose or as allowed by law, unless you have agreed otherwise.
Use of information
When you send us letters, emails, comments, articles, sketches, musical and competition items, information, and ideas, for the express purpose of making comments or contributions to the Hwa Tsang Monastery's website, you authorise us to freely reproduce, use, and disclose this information on our website, and also in our internal Monastery publications, including our Bi-Monthly Magazine. Unless you have stated otherwise, you warrant that all information provided by you, and identified as yours, has no third-party copyright restrictions. If we publish
your material on this website, you will be acknowledged as the author, and you will retain any copyright.
Updating personal information
The Hwa Tsang Monastery endeavours to ensure that the personal information it holds is accurate, complete and up-to-date. You can update your Hwa Tsang Monastery membership information either by writing to us, or sending a fax or email. Where personal information is no longer required by the Hwa tsang Monastery, it will be destroyed or de-identified.
Access to your information
You have the right to seek access the personal information held about you and to advise Hwa Tsang Monastery of any inaccuracy. There are some exceptions to this right set out in the Privacy Act. If you make an access request, Hwa Tsang Monastery will ask you to verify your identity and specify what information you require.
Security
The Monastery takes all reasonable steps to keep secure any personal information which we hold. We try to keep this information accurate and up to date. Personal information is stored in a secure computer or secure files. The Internet is not a secure method of transmitting information. The monastery cannot accept responsibility for the security of information you send to or receive from us over the Internet or for any unauthorised access or use of that information.
Disclosure
We do not share any personal details with any other organisations, unless required by law, or if you have agreed otherwise. All emails to this website are deleted after 6 months, unless there are special circumstances warranting their retention.
Photograph policy for the website
This website may feature suitable photographs of devotees and others participating in monastery activities.
We may feature photographs taken in "public places" without requesting the permission of participants. "Public places" includes the
outdoor public concourse areas of the monastery, or other outdoor parks, schools, universities, or
outdoor common areas used by the monks, nuns, devotees and others, around the monastery, or around Sydney.
No pictures of people worshipping inside the Main Hall, or meditation area, or library, or meeting rooms, or dormitory areas, or school classrooms, or university lecture rooms,
or other inside areas will be featured, without the express (verbal) permission of all participants.
The monastery operates a Tuition Class. To encourage students in their written, artistic, and community volunteering endeavours, the Monastery may feature student's work or photographs.
Should anyone object to any particular photograph being featured on the website, they should ring the monastery and state their concerns. We will action any
valid objections as soon as possible.
Children's Privacy
Suitable pictures of children under the age of 18, may be featured on this website, as part of the above mentioned conditions. As per Department of Education recommendations, children under the age of 18 are identified only by their grade, or by their first name, and not with their full name.
Webpage visitors and Cookies
No record is kept of computers logging on to this website. We do not send any cookies from this site to your pc. (Cookies are text files placed on to the users' computers from the servers.)
Email addresses
Email addresses supplied by users, may be retained and used only for the purpose for which they were provided.
Unsolicited (advertising) email
The monastery may occasionally send out emails about upcoming activities, to those people who have expressed an interest in such activities. If you receive unwanted emails from the monastery, please notify us, preferably by email. We will delete your email records immediately.
